Project details

Lyndon in Leaf is a ward level street tree planting initiative focused on increasing canopy cover in Lyndon, an area with comparatively low levels of tree cover. The project is seeking external funding to deliver the planting of high quality street trees in carefully selected locations where they will provide the greatest environmental and social benefit.

Street trees offer a wide range of proven benefits, including improved air quality, urban cooling, enhanced biodiversity and more attractive, welcoming streets. Increasing canopy cover will help mitigate the impacts of climate change while creating healthier neighbourhoods for residents, workers and visitors.

The project is designed to be efficient, deliverable and impactful, directing investment into long lived green infrastructure that will continue to provide benefits for decades. By focusing on areas of greatest need, Lyndon in Leaf helps address inequalities in access to green infrastructure and contributes to long term resilience at a local level.

The overall objective is to secure funding to deliver a visible, high impact improvement to Lyndon’s streetscape, creating greener, healthier and more climate resilient environments while ensuring trees are well designed, well located and supported during establishment.

Scheme / Programme

Lyndon in Leaf forms part of Solihull Council’s Planting Our Future programme, which aims to increase tree canopy cover across the borough through targeted planting, funding opportunities and community involvement. The programme supports long term goals around climate resilience, healthier places and equitable access to green infrastructure.

Project delivery timeline

The project will begin with site identification during spring–summer 2026. Once funding is secured, community engagement will take place to confirm final locations, with planting plans agreed by early autumn. Tree planting will then take place during the planting season from November to March, followed by establishment checks the following spring.

Community involvement

Community involvement is integral to the success of Lyndon in Leaf. During the design and planning stages, residents living close to proposed planting locations will be engaged to discuss tree placement and species choice, helping to address concerns and ensure trees are welcomed and supported.

Once funding is secured, further engagement will take place to confirm final planting plans before delivery. During the planting phase, residents will be kept informed about timescales and activity on their streets.

Post planting, local people will be encouraged to support tree establishment, for example through occasional watering during dry periods. This approach helps build a sense of ownership and pride, improves tree survival rates and supports the long term success of the investment by embedding the trees within the community they serve.

Ecosystem services & nature recovery

This project will deliver 5 priority actions in the West Midlands Local Nature Recovery Strategy.

The project will deliver the following environmental, economic, and social benefits:

2 ActionsPriority E. The urban environment is improved to become more nature rich

  • E1 - Create stepping stone habitats in areas where corridors cannot be established
  • E3 - Increase the structural and species diversity of habitats within public and private green spaces, and gardens

1 ActionsPriority J. Improved capacity of stakeholders to contribute to nature recovery

  • J2 - Support local people in managing and improving their local environment for nature

Project impact & reporting

The project delivery organisation will provide an annual progress report and a final project report against the following targets:

Urban trees

5 Trees planted

5 trees per parcel

Number of people living within a 15 min walk of the site who will benefit from new/improved accessible green/blue

Working with WMCA we will calculate how many people live within 15 minutes walk of the tree planting.

How many community engagement events will happen during the project?

1 events

one community engagement event per parcel

WMCA will produce an annual social and environmental impact report detailing the scale of benefits delivered across the region and acknowledging the contributions made by Funding Partners.
